Here in Umbria, the February sun is shining and the earliest of the irises are just starting to bloom. Iris reticulata grows from bulbs, rather than rhizomes. It likes well drained conditions, so if your soil is heavy, as ours is, it will do better in a pot or a raised bed. It flowers at the same time as snowdrops and would be lovely combined with them. If happy, it will multiply and form a mass of colour. Next year we will have pots for sale, but this year we’re just growing some for pleasure and to see which of the named cultivars do best. Above and below is Harmony, which is a lovely combination of blues. And below that is George, a rich plum purple, and Lady Beatrix Stanley, a delicate tracery, like a blue butterfly wing. Qui in Umbria, il sole di febbraio brilla e le primissime iridi stanno appena iniziando a fiorire. L’iris reticulata cresce dai bulbi, piuttosto che dai rizomi. Amano le condizioni ben drenate, quindi se il terreno è pesante, come il nostro, meglio metterle in vase o in un aiuole rialzato. Fioriscono allo stesso tempo dei bucaneve e sarebbe bello in combinazione con loro. Se felice, si moltiplicheranno e si formeranno una massa di colori. Il prossimo anno avremo vase in vendita, ma quest’anno ne stiamo solo coltivando per piacere e per vedere quali delle cultivar nominate danno il meglio effetto.
