I received a number of years ago, some rhizomes of an iris that was growing in an old English garden. It turned out to be a wonderful garden plant: elegant stems with classic lavender blue blooms, flushed with a touch of purple on the falls. Long-flowering and vigorous, with good foliage. We listed it as Iris pallida slender form, for want of a name, but with the comment that it was most probably a named historic variety that had lost its identity.

Both are in flower at the same time. I cut a stalk of I. pallida Slender form in the field and brought it up to compare with Gertrude and the height, and form of the branching, seem to match. Here is a side by side comparison of the flower parts, using two different flowers from I. pallida Slender form and comparing each with one from Gertrude.

There are some very subtle differences but I tend to think these are within the range of variation to be expected of examples growing in slightly different conditions: the plant in the field is growing more vigorously, having been in place for longer, and the petals are slightly broader. The back of the fall has a slightly larger pale patch than in Gertrude and the haft markings seem a little bolder but this could relate to the fact the petal is slightly bigger overall. On the whole, the similarities seem pretty convincing. Furthermore, the foliage, which is unusual amonst TBs in being slender and relatively short, matches.
